Flexible Railway Passenger Car Concepts For Efficient And Attractive Passenger Transportation
Through innovative interior design solutions (flexible seating plans for first -second class and efficient
seating plans in the conversion of sleeping coaches into ordinary coaches), the productivity and thus the
competitiveness of long distance rail travel will be improved in comparison to short distance air trips.
Project Presentation on 21st October 2005
On 21st Oct. 2005 we held a workshop in the premises of the University for Applied Arts with rail
operators and two design concepts for two application fields were selected for developing
them further. One covers comfort day travel including early morning resp.
late evening and the other further develops inexpensive night travel.
Presentation of the Mock-up February 22th 006
Finalizing the project, the team proudly presented the mock-up in the rooms of ÖBB-technical services in Vienna.
One seat is equipped with a reclining mechanism allowing operators and users to test the new quality.
The economic evaluation has validated the concept which offers 8-18 seats more per railway car in a standard which
equals nearly first class with respect to leg room due to the innovative arrangement. The next aim is to
demonstrate the concept in operation in a complete railway car.
